The Galaxy Reservoir has been designed by fully certified engineers to International
Standards and has been checked by independent-consulting engineers. The long life, corrosion
resistant Zincalume® High Tensile Steel that is used in our tanks is supplied by BHP Steel, a member
of the BHP / Billiton Group.
The Galaxy Reservoir is fabricated by qualified tradesmen and certified engineering companies to
achieve a highly competitive, modern design and a range in size from 20 kl to 2.65 megalitre, carrying
a 10 year non-leakage guarantee and a life expectancy in excess of 65 years. The department of trade and
industry has approved ( June 2004 ) a production grant to SBS that will lead to the Galaxy Reservoir
being 100% locally produced from its current level of 50 %. The design conforms to applicable
international standards including those for earthquake, cyclonic and desert conditions.

Galaxy Reservoirs are easily transportable to remote areas (A 250kl tank fits on the back of a 1 ton
long wheel base bakkie), require very little site preparation and can be in full use within days of
commencement of installation. As an example, a recent installation of a 1.5 megalitre tank in
Thornville (outside Pietermaritzburg) took only 14 days from commencement to commissioning.
A 600 kl rservoir in Badplaas, Mpumalanga took only 8 days to complete.

Comparisons with traditional concrete, concrete panel and pressed steel tanks show that in certain
sizes a saving of up to 50% is achieved by the use of Galaxy reservoirs, excluding additional savings in
excavation, supervision and other time related expenses.
The involvement of the local community and empowerment of Previously Disadvantaged Individuals is
guaranteed by the use of Galaxy reservoirs due to three factors:
- Galaxy reservoirs allow relatively inexperienced tenderers in the form of emerging contractors and
SMME’s who have little plant and equipment to tender for the works on an even footing with large and
well-established firms without a compromise in the integrity of the final product.
- The site preparation for Galaxy reservoirs is commonly done by unskilled and semi-skilled labour from
the local community to avoid transport and accommodation costs.
- The relative simplicity and logic of Galaxy design allows for skills transfer at a level that suits
unskilled labour.
The Galaxy design team is able to design our reservoirs, fittings (all types & sizes), accessories and
installations according to your requirements and budgets. Galaxy have also recently commissioned a tank
stand design and can currently elevate up to 150kl reservoirs to 10 meters. Another recent
development is that the reservoirs can now hold fuel and chemicals by using special engineered
liners.
