Grey Water re-use is one of the best ways for us to help conserve and sustain our valuable
water resources. There are many different ways to go about re-using your grey water, from simply diverting
your shower and bath drains onto the lawn, to using a surge tank and submersible pump system to
push your grey water onto grass and non-sensitive plant beds, to actually treating the grey water so
that it can be stored and used for irrigation, flushing toilets and even washing laundry.
Please note that when using grey water, the following points are very important to consider:
- Grey water comes mainly from showers, baths, hand basins, and occasionally washing machines.
- Water from toilets, kitchens sinks and dishwashers is raw sewerage which should never be re-used in
a grey water system.
- Grey water that is not processed through some type of treatment system should not be stored for
periods of longer than 24 to 36 hours. After this time, the grey water begins turning to black water (sewerage),
it begins to smell and can develop bacteria etc that can be harmful.
- Grey water that is pumped directly onto your lawn or plant beds is safe but it is best utilised in
the morning so that it soaks into the soil and is exposed to the sun.
- Grey water should not be mixed or stored in the same tank or container that is used for rainwater unless
it is treated first.
- Grey water can be treated to meet the EU Standard (E.U. Directive 76/160/EWG) for "Recreational Water".
- With current advances in technology, there is a grey water system to meet most any need and/or budget.
Because grey water systems should be carefully considered and tailored to fit the specific site and situation, we reccommend
that you contact a sales representative for more information and possibly an
on site visit to determine what will work best for you.
