Ikwezi Municipality Drought Relief Project
Ikwezi Mayor Hon. Sizwe Mngwevu started this initiative for the poorer members of the communities of
Jansenville, Kliplaat and Waterford in July of 2006. The project, now about to move into its fourth phase has seen
the delivery and installation of over 1 800 rainwater tanks complete taps and catchment kits (gutters and down pipes
standardised to fit the homes of the community without modification).
Hydro Dynamics became involved as the successful tenderer for the supply of the rainwater tanks for the project. From
this point onwards we have been assisting with the design of the catchment kits, tank bases and tap systems that
are used throughout the project.
This was our first large scale project and by far the most successful, we are proud to be associated with the project
and the members of the Ikwezi Municipality Staff and community.
Ikwezi Municipality Community Water House Project
This project is very special to us as it was an opportuntity to give back to a community that has supported us well
over the past several years. When we were approached by Dr. Konrad Soyez of the University of Potsdam, Germany, about
a suitable location for a project to recycle grey water and allow a community access to washing, showering, flush toilets
and many other benefits we could think of no place in more need that this small municipality in the middle of the
drought stricken Karoo.
A meeting between the German partners, Hydro Dynamics and other role players was set up and the members of the
Ikwezi Council agreed to accept the project into their community.
The Water House has been completed and is now in its running in phase. A final ceremony to open the building to all
the community is being planned for the near future.
This is a pilot project that we hope will prove successful and be implemented in the many other municipalities
throughout South Africa who are struggling every day to find sufficient safe water supply for their communities.
Rietbron - Cacadu District Municipality Drought Relief Project
The Rietbron Drought Relief Project was a spin off from the Ikwezi Project. Members of the planning and implementation
team from the Cacadu DM were in Ikwezi and saw how well their rainwater harvesting was working for them and decided
to pursue the same idea within other areas in their municipality.
Hydro Dynamics was again contacted to assist in the planning and supply of tanks and catchment kits for this
project. To date the project has seen completion of phase 2 with over 400 complete systems now installed.
